With negotiations over the proposed India-US trade agreement entering the final stretch, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said only a “handful of issues” remain unresolved and expressed confidence that the deal could be wrapped up in the coming weeks or months.
In an exclusive interaction with IANS in Washington, Gor said recent discussions in New Delhi involving US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had helped move the talks forward.
“A lot of it is, the language has to be written. I was in those meetings 48 hours ago with Greer in Delhi, and we met with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who is a great friend of mine. It was very productive. There are a handful of issues that remain. A lot of it now is on the language that ultimately both sides will sign. We are confident that over the next few weeks and months, it will get done,” he said.

Seeking to temper expectations over the pace of negotiations, Gor pointed out that trade agreements often take years to conclude.
“To put it in perspective, we have been working on this deal for a year and a half. The European Union deal, which is still not done, has been in the works for 20 years. Everybody asks why this is taking so long, but we are on an incredible trajectory to get it done,” he added.
Modi-Trump Meeting Covered Trade, Defence
The envoy also described the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France as “very productive”, saying the leaders spent more than an hour discussing a range of issues.
“Yes, I was there. We had a fantastic meeting. It was very warm, over an hour together. They covered a lot of aspects, including trade and some defence issues. It was a very productive meeting. We were able to bring up several issues, and hopefully some of those things will get announced over the next few weeks,” Gor said.
‘Extraordinary Time’ In India
Reflecting on his six months in India, Gor said travelling across the country had reinforced his belief in the immense possibilities for India-US cooperation.
“In those six months, it’s been an extraordinary time. I’ve gotten to travel all over the beautiful country and have met some incredible people all over the place. And really, seeing the dynamic aspects of India and the incredible potential. I keep talking about this incredible potential, and they mean it,” he said.
He stressed that collaboration between New Delhi and Washington could expand significantly across sectors, including pharmaceuticals, information technology and defence.
“So, whether that’s something in the pharmaceutical industry, whether that’s IT, whether that’s defence cooperation, you name it, the United States and India can work together on it,” Gor said.
