A 22-year-old woman was found dead at a homestay in Assam’s Guwahati on Saturday, prompting a police investigation. She was reportedly staying with her boyfriend at the homestay before her death. The deceased woman has been identified as Nimisha Thakuria, who was a student at Gauhati University.
As police probe the case, her boyfriend, Ashik Ali, has been arrested as part of the investigation. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.

Meanwhile, Ali has claimed that Thakuria had died by suicide, according to police. The man claimed that the woman “hanged herself on the ceiling fan and died from self-harm,” police said.
Bolin Deori, DCP (West), said that three youths admitted Thakuria at Azara Primary Health Centre on Saturday morning, and later she was referred to Guwahati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) where she was declared dead.
“At GMCH doctors declared her brought dead. We caught the accused person, and he is now under police custody, and investigation is underway. According to Ashik Ali, she hanged herself in a ceiling fan and we will investigate whether it is true or false,” Bolin Deori said.
On the other hand, police found injury marks on the body of the deceased girl.
Police, however, said they were examining all possible angles and would not accept the account without verification.
According to India Today North East (NE), Nimisha was found unconscious at Rudra’s Kitchen homestay in the Garchuk-Dharapur area early Saturday. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Nimisha was a Sociology student at Gauhati University and lived in Dharapur. Police are investigating her movements and the circumstances leading up to her death. Preliminary information suggests she had gone to the homestay with her boyfriend and had been staying there since September 20, though officials have not formally confirmed the detail.
Homestay staff reportedly told police that Nimisha and her boyfriend had visited the property on earlier occasions.
Meanwhile, protests were reported in Dharapur, with some locals raising allegations of “Love Jihad” following Nimisha’s death. These allegations have not been established by police.
Nimisha’s family has also raised concerns over the circumstances preceding her death. She had reportedly left home around 5 pm, saying she would meet friends. Before her death, she allegedly called her mother in distress and said she had been attacked and kicked in the chest and was having difficulty breathing. She subsequently became unreachable. Police are investigating these claims and the exact cause and circumstances of her death.
