Former deputy speaker of West Bengal Assembly and TMC leader Asish Banerjee was found dead at a party office in his home in Birbhum on Sunday morning. The police has found a purported suicide handwritten note near his body in which the leader mentioned that no one is responsible for his death.
Former West Bengal Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee was found dead Sunday; a note cited disillusionment with politics and denied TRDA corruption allegations. Banerjee, a former five-term MLA, lost his seat in the 2026 elections.
Asish Banerjee’s Alleged Suicide Note
The one-page written note had written in Bengali which reportedly mentions that Banerjee wrote entering politics was a big mistake. He also asked the young generation of his family to stay away from politics and focus on their respective professions.
Banerjee also wrote that he never been involved in corruption or taken any money in exchange to get work done. He also alleged that he had been struggled to accept some ‘wrongdoings’ within TMC but had not been able to speak against them.
The former deputy speaker also mentioned to the Tarapith-Rampurhat Development Authority (TRDA). He clarified that he had no role in its tender decisions, cheque issuance, building plan approvals or No Objection certificate.
“I had no responsibilities at the TRDA other than attending general meetings. I was not on the tender committee. I did not have the authority to sign cheques. I was not involved in approving plans or issuing ‘No Objection’ certificates. No one ever consulted me on these matters. I condemn the actions taken to malign me. Today, I feel that entering politics was a mistake. I am advising the young men of my family not to join politics; let them focus on their respective professions,” he allegedly wrote.
Five-Term MLA From Rampurhat
Asish Banerjee had joined politics in his student days and he also worked as teacher. He won the Rampurhat Assembly constituency from 2001 until 2026. He was also the minister in TMC government holding school education and agriculture.
He lost his constituency in 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections when BJP’s Dhruva Saha defeated him with more than 24000 vote margins.
Death Comes After TMC’s 15-Year Rule
TMC is facing setback everyday in West Bengal after they lost the assembly elections in 2026. Their many Rajyasabha MP joined BJP and even some of the senior leaders have also left TMC. Now this one also comes as a major halt to TMC as one of the senior leader and their former deputy speaker has found dead in such circumstances.
