An important announcement has been made regarding Pongal gifts in Tamil Nadu, bringing festive cheer to ration card holders across the state. Handlooms and Textiles Minister R Gandhi has confirmed that free dhotis and sarees will be distributed to all ration card holders, with the process set to be completed by January 6, 2026. Speaking on the matter, he said, “The targets for the veshtis and sarees produced for distribution to poor and needy people for the Pongal festival have been fully achieved. The production work was completed very quickly.”
He added that the distribution was planned well in advance, and by December 15 all the veshtis and sarees had been formally handed over to the Revenue Department. From there, the clothes are being dispatched to ration shops in the respective areas.
All necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that people receive the items without any inconvenience. Minister Gandhi confirmed that by January 6, all beneficiaries across Tamil Nadu will have received them.
Meanwhile, with the next Assembly election due in 2026, reports suggest that the government is planning to include a cash component in this year’s Pongal gift package. It is said that a decision has been taken to provide Rs 3,000 in cash to each rice ration card holder. Although an initial proposal suggested Rs 5,000, the amount is likely to be limited to Rs 3,000 due to financial constraints.
A meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin is expected to take place on Wednesday at the Chennai Secretariat to discuss the matter. Food Minister R Sakkarapani, Cooperation Minister KR Periyakaruppan, and senior officials from various departments are likely to attend.
While the announcement on free veshtis and sarees has already been made, people are now eagerly awaiting an official update on the Pongal gift package. Notably, ration card holders appear to be receiving one positive announcement after another this Pongal season.
