Istanbul, Feb 08: The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey on Monday has passed 8,500 as of Wednesday. In Turkey, officials said that 6,000 died and more than 32,000 were injured. In Syria, the death toll rose to 2,500.

Rescuers raced Tuesday to find survivors in the rubble of thousands of buildings brought down by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks that struck eastern Turkiye and neighbouring Syria, with the discovery of more bodies raising the death toll to more than 7,000.

The death toll rose Wednesday to more than 9,400, making the quake the deadliest in more than a decade.

News agency AFP updated the death toll from Monday’s devastating earthquake and said that 8,300 people have died in southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, with over 2,000 people dead in Syria.
But with such a wide swath of territory hit by Monday’s earthquake and nearly 6,000 buildings confirmed to have collapsed in Turkey alone, their efforts were spread thin.
Countries around the world dispatched teams to assist in the rescue efforts, and Turkiye’s disaster management agency said more than 24,400 emergency personnel were now on the ground.
