The Ghaziabad Police said that 10 members of the Hindu Raksha Dal (HRD) have been arrested for allegedly distributing swords from their office in Shalimar Garden. The arrests were made after a video showing the incident spread widely on social media. Police also recovered eight swords from those taken into custody.
According to the police, a case has been registered against 40 people at the Shalimar Garden police station. Of these, 30 are yet to be identified. The investigation began after officials received information on December 29 about the distribution of swords at the HRD office in Shalimar Garden X-2.
In a statement, police said the video showed several people holding swords, raising slogans and taking part in aggressive demonstrations. Acting on this information, teams were sent to the area and arrests were made near a telephone exchange.
Those arrested have been identified as Kapil Kumar, Shyam Prasad, Arun Jain, Rampal, Amit Singh, Amit Kumar, Amit Arora, Mohit Kumar, Devendra Baghel and Ujala Singh. Police said all of them were linked to the Hindu Raksha Dal.
The main accused in the case, HRD national president Pinky Chaudhary, is currently absconding. After the arrests, Chaudhary posted a video on social media in which he claimed that swords were distributed earlier in the day. He said a large number of police personnel later reached the office and that some of his workers had been arrested. He added that the purpose of the distribution was to “make Hindu families strong” and referred to the ongoing situation in Bangladesh.
During questioning, the arrested men told police that they had gathered at the office on Chaudhary’s instructions and that the swords were arranged by him. Police said legal action is being taken and the criminal records of all those arrested are being checked.
