What Is Jhalmuri?
Jhalmuri is one of West Bengal’s most popular street foods and is especially associated with Kolkata. The snack is made using puffed rice mixed with ingredients such as roasted peanuts, chopped onions, tomatoes, boiled potatoes, herbs and a blend of spices.
The name comes from two Bengali words — jhal, meaning spicy, and muri, meaning puffed rice. Known for its tangy and spicy flavour, jhalmuri is distinguished by the use of mustard oil, which gives the snack its signature pungent aroma and taste.
PM Modi’s ‘Jhalmuri’ Moment
This is not the first time PM Modi has been seen enjoying the iconic Bengali snack.
During the West Bengal assembly election campaign on April 19, the Prime Minister made an unexpected stop at a roadside jhalmuri stall in Jhargram after addressing a public rally.
As he was heading towards his helicopter, PM Modi briefly interacted with a local vendor, purchased jhalmuri and spent a few moments chatting with people gathered at the stall.
The interaction quickly gained attention on social media, with many describing it as a heartwarming and unscripted moment from the campaign trail. The video has also garnered over 100 million views.
