Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and alleged that the process was carried out in a “botched-up manner”, while claiming that the political situation in West Bengal had become such that she could no longer move out of her house.
Mamata Banerjee made the remarks at the INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi, where opposition parties discussed their strategy over the Election Commission and the SIR exercise. She also alleged that the post-election situation in West Bengal reflected the “autocracy” of the BJP.
“I cannot move out of the house now,” Mamata Banerjee said, while speaking about the situation following the elections and her criticism of the BJP. The Trinamool Congress chief also criticised the manner in which the SIR exercise was conducted, describing the entire process as “botched up”. Her remarks came amid a wider Opposition campaign against the Election Commission over the revision of electoral rolls.
The INDIA bloc meeting at the Constitution Club of India was attended by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, besides Mamata Banerjee and leaders of several other Opposition parties. The bloc is seeking a joint strategy over the SIR controversy and has been demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Mamata Banerjee’s remarks come amid continuing Opposition allegations that the SIR exercise has resulted in large-scale deletion or exclusion of names from electoral rolls. The Congress has called for the rollback of the exercise and the use of pre-SIR electoral rolls in future elections, while also seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.
The Opposition’s campaign has intensified after the Congress Working Committee discussed the SIR exercise and the functioning of the Election Commission on Tuesday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has since called for the use of pre-SIR electoral rolls and a return to ballot-paper voting, while demanding greater transparency in the revision process.
