Bangladesh Training Jet Crashes Into School: 19 Dead, Including 16 Children

A
total
of
19
people
have
been
killed
after
a
Bangladesh
Air
Force
training
aircraft
crashed
into
a
school
campus
in
Dhaka’s
northern
Uttara
area
on
Monday
afternoon,
NDTV
reported.

16
students,
two
teachers
and
a
pilot,
identified
as
Flight
Lieutenant
Mohammed
Toukir
Islam,
have
been
killed
in
the
tragic
incident.

According
to
a
report
in
the
Dhaka
Tribune,
the
aircraft
crashed
on
a
campus
of
the
Milestone
School
and
College.
It
is
reported
that
children
were
also
present
at
the
crash
site.
So
far,
the
Fire
Service
and
Civil
Defence
confirmed
at
least
one
death
in
the
accident
even
as
the
rescue
operations
are
underway.

Deputy
Police
Commissioner
of
DMP’s
Uttara
Division,
Mohidul
Islam,
told
reporters:
“A
training
aircraft
has
crashed
in
the
Milestone
College
area.
Rescue
operations
are
underway.
Further
details
will
be
provided
later.”
The
building
was
used
for
playgroup
classes
which
ended
moments
before
the
crash.

Lima
Khanam,
the
duty
officer
at
the
Fire
Service
control
room,
told
the
publication:
“We
received
the
report
at
1:18pm
that
an
aircraft
has
crashed
near
Milestone
School
and
College
in
Uttara.”

Local
media
reports
claim
that
eight
units
from
the
Uttara,
Tongi,
Pallabi,
Kurmitola,
Mirpur,
and
Purbachal
fire
services
are
working
at
the
crash
site.

The
unconfirmed
visuals
doing
rounds
on
social
media
sites
show
several
people
being
rescued
with
injuries.
The
injured
have
been
rushed
to
Uttara
Adhunik
Hospital.

The
eyewitnesses
have
claimed
that
they
heard
a
sudden
loud
bang
as
the
jet
crashed
into
the
school
campus.

The
building
was
primarily
used
for
playgroup
classes,
which
had
just
ended
moments
before
the
crash.
